2011-2012 Reflections Theme:
‘Diversity means…’
National PTA has been honoring students’ artistic achievements through the Reflections Program since 1969. Students are challenged to create artwork inspired by a specific theme.
Themes are selected from hundreds of ideas submitted by students from across the country. Students submit artwork to their local PTAs. Works are judged at the local level and the winning entries advance to the council and state levels. The top state award-winning entries then advance to the national level.
Six arts areas – photography, visual arts, musical composition, dance choreography, literature and film production – are judged on interpretation of theme, creativity, artistic merit and mastery of the medium.

National PTA believes all children deserve a quality arts education and encourages students to pursue artistic expression through participation in its annual arts Reflections Program. The program offers students the opportunity to create works of art for fun and recognition. Students in preschool through grade 12 are encouraged to create and submit works of art in one or more of six areas: literature, musical composition, photography, visual arts (which includes art forms such as drawing, painting, print making, and collage), dance choreography and film/video production. In its more than 30-year history, the program has encouraged millions of students across the nation and in American schools overseas to create works of art.
